AHMEDABAD: You've got a friend request - from GTU! In a unique experiment to connect with the youth studying in technical colleges pursuing degree and diploma engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA, architecture and hotel management, the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has decided to use the social networking site Facebook.
Since the past three days, GTU has sent friend requests to thousands of students studying in different technical colleges. Nearly 3,000 have accepted the request as well!
GTU vice-chancellor A K Aggrawal said the experiment was put into motion considering that a majority of students are active on social networking sites. "We decided to use this platform optimally to connect with the students better," Aggrawal added.
The GTU has already made special pages on the 25-odd innovation complexes to be started by the university. Officials said the social networking site would be used to post information on the syllabus, exam schedules as well as updates about events, conferences and special lectures to be held.
With a view to involve students in research and keep them abreast of new developments, there would be regular posts on new, path-breaking research papers presented at the international platform in different universities, the officials added.
"Students generally indulge in small talk on social networking sites, share personal information and developments. We want to use this space to enhance their knowledge about the developments in their fields and pique their curiosity," Aggrawal said.
