Postgraduate: UCSI University’s Pharmaceutical Master’s Programme

UCSI University’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences research activities  have increased by leaps and bounds, some in close collaboration with  local research and government institutions. At the faculty, students are  provided early exposure to various pharmacy-linked experiences such as  industrial training, public health campaigns, community clerkship,  hospital pharmacy clerkship and also to problem-based learning (PBL). In  addition, they receive invaluable practical guidance from our external  partners, experienced industrial speakers, appointed pharmacists and  doctors incorporated under the various faculties. Last year, The  Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing at UCSI University’s Kuala  Lumpur Campus enabled UCSI University’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical  Sciences and the pharmaceutical industry to work together on joint  research to study  the anti-cancer properties of plants found in Malaysia to combat  cancer. Under this collaborative research effort, the faculty will  establish several research groups to look into possible new therapeutic  agents for cancer, with research as the focus of the faculty’s first  postgraduate programme: the Master of Science in Pharmaceutical  Chemistry.  According to Dr Yeong, UCSI University’s Dean of the Faculty  of Pharmaceutical Sciences, “Research needs to have a purpose and  contribute to society. Although there is still much to do, we believe  that the natural resources available in Malaysia allow for new  therapeutic cancer treatments which we can contribute to. With the  synergistic energy between us and natural wellness, we believe we can  achieve many things.” UCSI University’s master’s programme offers a  unique curriculum of both research and academic coursework that also  includes compulsory elective business courses. It is the first private  university in Malaysiato offer a degree in Master of Science in  Pharmaceutical Chemistryin a mixed mode format to prepare students for  both academic and industrial careers and the business knowledge to  better understand the background of their industry. Included in the  programme is also a research project under the guidance of the Faculty  academic team that would upon completion result  in a thesis.  UCSI University’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences  second postgraduate programme, Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Technology, aims to produce professional  ethical graduates capable of contributing to the local and global  pharmaceutical industry for the advancement of quality pharmaceutical  products, as well as for research and development. Thus, students will  be inculcated on life-long learning to develop creative, critical  problem-solving skills with good communication, management and  leadership skills.
Also using a mixed mode structure,  this coursework plus dissertation structure offers advanced knowledge  in pharmaceutical technology, as well as ‘elective’ management courses  under the Faculty of Management and Information Technology. In addition,  the Faculty also offers a recognised and well-established Bachelor of  Pharmacy (Hons) degree to an increasing number of students. Arranged  under four main disciplines, courses offered within the School of  Pharmacy are Physiology & Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry,  Pharmaceutics & Pharmaceutical Technology and Clinical Pharmacy.  With aunique curriculum, the Programme offers integrated courses  involving the School’s four main disciplines to be taught in each body  system.  The four-year programme involves the early part of the  curriculum to focus students gaining fundamental pharmaceutical  knowledge as the foundation for their later years when they practise as  pharmacists.
