The ideal textbook of geriatric medicine would be authoritative and lucid. It would give practical guidelines on how to manage the medical problems of old age and also display an intellectual rigour. The contributors would have a global prospective. They would tell us what was fact and what was surmise; they would indicate areas for fruitful research. The book would make the prosaic fascinating and not neglect those conditions which are rare but reversible or modifiable. The references would be extensive. The text would be unstuffy: reading such a book would be fun.
